Humans of AACC presents Retired English Professor and Distinguished Lecturer Henry Sloss and English and Communications and Department Chair Steven Canaday:
How did you guys start going to the gym together?
Steven Canaday: We were colleagues in the same department and he was going over, I think 3 or 4 times a week, and he was going with this other guy. They were trying, they really were, they talked to one of the gym instructors who was a body builder and they were going over there trying to bulk out. They both, I think, pulled some serious injuries.
Henry Sloss: A lot of injuries.
SC: So I went over just to really keep them tamed, ‘you know we don’t need to try to lift as much weight as we can at one time. We can lift a little bit of weight a lot of times and maybe that would be better for our heart.
HS: So he came over as a counselor. The other guy, he disappeared, he stopped coming to the gym. He used to come regularly and then he…
SC: He retired.
HS: He surrendered to death.
SC: Don’t put this stuff about death in here!
HS: But that’s what one does! That’s what you are doing. Trying to keep…
SC: Alive.
HS: Alive! I’m certainly not doing it because I’m trying to get stronger or bulk up or anything. Just trying to stay healthy.
