AACC Men’s Basketball fell short this weekend against Prince George’s Community College in the NJCAA DIII Region XX Championships, resulting in a second place finish.

The Riverhawks beat Butler Community College in round one with an 86-60 victory. But couldn’t continue the momentum in round two against Prince George’s Community College, ending the tournament with a 73-68 loss.

Walter Tolliver led the team in both games with 17 points and 7 rebounds against the Owls and 19 points and four rebounds against the Pioneers.

“We’ve been playing hard since the end of the season,” Tolliver, a third-year health and exercise sciences student, said. “I think we should’ve came away with the [region] championship. But we still got our confidence and we can still come away with the district championship.”

Tolliver said while he thought receiving recognition for the All-Tournament team was a great accomplishment, he wishes the team would’ve came away with the region title.

The NJCAA Region XX Division III tournament named both Tolliver and his teammate Dayvon Cuffey to the All-Tournament team.

Cuffey contributed to the tournament with 17 points and nine rebounds against Butler and 16 points and six rebounds against Prince George’s Community College.

“It’s a great achievement for me, but I’m motivated to get to the next level,” Cuffey, a second-year transfer studies student, said. “All of the trophies and everything is nice, but I’m on a mission now.”

Cuffey said he predicts the team will perform well in the Division III District Championship Tournament as long as they work together.

Riverhawks’ Men’s Basketball will play their next game at Sandhills Community College in North Carolina for the NJCAA District VII Championships in Pinehurst, North Carolina on March 1-2.

If the Men’s Basketball team claims the District Title, they will travel to the National Championships at the UCR Regional Sports Center in Rochester Minnesota on March 14-16.
