Soapbox Sister event coming to AACC

Tre Mooring, Reporter

AACC students and faculty will perform historic speeches at an event coming in March.

Soapbox Sisters, an annual Women’s History Month event at AACC, allows students to “perform dramatic readings of both current and historically significant speeches from women around the world.”

In a dramatic reading, a student will recite a speech with an exaggerated voice and frequently use gestures.

Students will be able to choose a speech from a list they make themselves at the meetings.

Dr. April Copes, a communications professor, and Madeline McArdle, a student, run the Soapbox Sister’s event and meetings.

“One goal of the event is just to educate people about the contributions women have made,” Copes said.

“Another goal is to have students feel empowered, hearing messages…resonate with them.”

The Soapbox Sisters event and meetings are open to all students. Copes currently has meetings in the Humanities building, room 112, to prepare the students and their speeches for the main event on March 30.

Meetings are on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1.
