A new men’s student support group gathered in the library to build vision boards on Thursday.
Second Wind held opened its first workshop to all students this week to focus on setting attainable goals. Students used magazine photos and scraps to create vision boards that represent their goals.
“I’m really just putting a lot of things I am interested in [on the board],” Dean Harrison, a first-year computer science major, said. “I have a hard time making my goals tangental. So I’m hoping that by putting all of these things together, it will help guide me toward what I actually want.”
Vision boards are self-made collages of photos and phrases designed to help motivate the creator toward a desired outcome.
“My personal goal is to get my grades up and get my associate’s degree,” Lily Davis, a fourth-year computer science student, said, “so I can move to an internship in cybersecurity. And hopefully start my career. … And [to find[ a schedule that will prioritize me. Instead of burning myself out.”
Davis added, “It’s reflected [on my board] by showing the chaos stage that I am in. … It’s definitely more just getting out of my own head type of thing.”
“We had a really great turnout for our third event,” Christopher Robinson, president and founder of Second Wind, said. “I want to help people get a little creative. … I want to help people visualize and actualize their goals for personal growth. And to relax and have fun while doing it.”
Matthew Harasin, a second-year marketing student, went into detail about the photos he selected for his collage.
“[You see] the part where it says, ‘Do you always think it will be like this?’” Harasin said. “I’m currently studying for an exam, and next week I have to start crunching for another exam. And the next week I gotta start crunching for another exam. So, the big ‘No’ [on the board], I think, encapsulates my feelings on that.”
