More than 50 students picked up free produce and learned about the importance of movement at an event on Wednesday.
It was “a beautiful day,” AACC’s basic needs coordinator Bethany Tatro said. “And our mission for the Wellness Wednesday free produce market is to get good, nutritious food into the hands of our AACC community.”
According to Tatro, the event was the third Wellness Wednesday, hosted by the Office of Student Engagement and the Health and Wellness Center, of the semester. The event is on the first Wednesday of every month.
Adriana Eastle, a registered nurse and wellness specialist, handed out resistance bands and pedometers to promote the theme of movement. Students participated in a fitness activity by walking across the footbridge and back to earn free water bottles and mugs.
“I just think that people don’t realize how easy it is … to move, especially if you’re sitting all day in class or at home or work,” Eastle said. “But there’s lots of different ways you can incorporate movement in your day.”
Eastle, who helped organize Wellness Wednesday, said the event went “pretty good,” adding that her favorite part was “the enthusiasm some students had for walking, wanting to win stuff.”
First-year transfer studies student Alex Youngkin said his favorite part of the event was getting produce.
“Being able to get the produce, it makes it feel more like an activity and more involved,” Youngkin added.
Hugh Michalski-Cooper, a first-year kinesiology student, said he enjoyed interacting with staff on campus at the event.
“Makes me feel a little more involved, more like a school spirit kind of part of the school,” Michalski-Cooper added
“The fitness stuff … [I] had a great time with that. …. Very good stuff, like, it’s very informational,” Youngkin said.
