Playoffs set: Riverhawks to play PG Owls on Saturday
February 24, 2023
Riverhawks men’s basketball coach Joe Snowden said he feels great about the team’s chances of making a deep playoff run.
The Riverhawks will play tomorrow at 5 p.m. against the Prince George Community College Owls in the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III Region semifinals. The game will be played at Westmoreland County Community College in Pennsylvania.
Guard Jack Taylor told Campus Current last week the team could make a “run.”
If “we play a full 40 minutes [and] play our game, I think we can beat any team in our region,” Taylor, a second-year transfer studies student, said.
The Riverhawks went 4-25 in the regular season and the Owls finished 23-3.
Guard Truth Norton said the way to upset the Owls is to tighten up the team’s defense.
“Our offense is there,” Norton, a second-year general studies student, noted. “We just need to work on defense and we can win the game as long as our defense is good.”
Snowden said the way to get shooting guard Jeremiah “Scoob” Stroman, who led the squad in scoring, off to a quick start is to “set up some screens [and] set up some good backdoor cuts.”
Snowden said he expects the veterans to step up in the postseason.
“One and you’re done,” Snowden said. “You lose, you go home. If that doesn’t get you revved up, nothing can.”
The Riverhawks lost to the Owls 80-71 in the 2022 National Junior College Athletic Association Region 20 Division III Men’s Basketball championship.
Snowden added: “Look for that upset.”
