Campus celebrates Irish American History Month
March 11, 2021
AACC is celebrating Irish American History Month in March.
The celebration kicked off with virtual events focusing on black abolitionists from Boston to Ireland and a deep dive into Irish sayings and legends.
Still to come are a virtual performance by the Galway Girls, a multi-instrumental Celtic trio, on March 14, and an Irish cooking demonstration on March 30.
The Galway Girls will sing and play everything from traditional Irish folk songs to modern hits.
For the virtual cooking class, chef Dave Ludwig of AACC’s Hospitality, Culinary Arts and Tourism Institute will demonstrate his recipe for Irish stew. Those who register for the class will receive the recipe in advance so they can stock up on the ingredients and cook along.
Tirrany Thurmond, coordinator of Irish American History Month at AACC, said she’s excited about the cooking demonstration and hopes students, faculty and staff will participate.
“It’s important to honor the heritage of a number of immigrants who came to America in pursuit of a better life,” said Thurmond, the college’s coordinator for inclusive excellence. “It’s an unknown part of history that we need to celebrate more, honor and pay homage to.”
Third-year health, fitness and exercise student Jared Daniels agreed.
“It’s important to celebrate where they came from and their culture and history,” he said, noting that he does not observe St. Patrick’s Day, which is on March 17.
First-year general studies student Jay Meade said the college’s commemoration of Irish history takes him back.
“I haven’t celebrated St. Patrick’s Day since middle school,” he said.
