Two students are running for Student Government Association in a special election that ends Sunday.
The candidates are Meredith Dales, a second-year kinesiology student, and Chris Chambers, a first-year engineering student. Both candidates said their main goals are to strengthen the campus community.
“My main goal would be to increase student engagement and student activities,” Chambers said. “I really want the students here to have a great time while they’re here. I feel like that’s important.”
Dales, who has been involved with the Leadership Challenge Program, agreed.
“I want to connect student groups,” Dales said. “I want to connect as much as I can on campus to each other. So if we have needs … I could help, of course, to be the voice for anything.”
The winner of the election will fill the role left vacant when former SGA President Jayeim Blake resigned over the winter break midway through his two-semester term.
The executive vice president and several vice presidents resigned over the break as well .Three of those positions are up for election, but single candidates are running unopposed for each slot.
Those positions are executive vice president, vice president of outreach and vice president of finance.
Dales said she wants to “redefine” the college as SGA president.
“I feel that I have a great opportunity to really listen and be a conduit for communication between students, faculty, departments, programs,” Dales said. “I would love to facilitate a change on campus that brings community together.”
Dales added: “I think that we have the ability to refine ourselves, even when we’re thriving in life. We can still come into school and pursue deeper enrichment.”
Chambers said he wants to do “as much as possible” to improve students’ lives on campus, adding, “I would say just raising more money for SGA and for all the clubs here.”
“So as long as we’re coordinating events and staying organized … I think that would be a big success,” Chambers said. “I want to hear from students some things that they want to see more specifically, instead of just coming up with my own ideas.”
Elections began on Feb. 18 and will end on Feb. 25. Students can vote on The Nest.
