Students gathered in the Hawk’s Nest Thursday night for the first open mic night this semester.
AACC’s literary journal, Amaranth, hosts Coffee House–a night where audience members may perform on stage whether it’s their first time in front of a crowd or their twentieth–once a month.
“I love being able to see all the different things my peers are working on,” Isabelle Murray, a third-year creative writing student who read three poems, said.
Students are encouraged to get on stage in front of their peers and try out something new at each event. Attendees are welcome to read poems, short stories, sing karaoke and perform stand-up jokes.
“It’s fun … it’s a great way to try out your creative skills and workshop material,” Chris Chambers, a first-year engineering student, said. “This is a great way [you can] participate in school events.”
Chris entertained the crowd with a 7-minute stand up set, including observations on the elderly and the current social climate of our country.
Amaranth Editor-in-Chief Zoë Sharp closed out the night by advertising Amaranth’s first ever anonymous workshop being held next Monday in Hum 112, and urged all students in attendance to submit pieces.
“We will workshop and talk about [your piece] just to give you guys a little more perspective on our taste as a team,” Sharp said.
Sharp added, “We promise to be careful with your pieces. … We greatly appreciate the arts.”
