The Office of Student Engagement closed out welcome back week with karaoke this Wednesday.
Students gathered in the CALT to perform some of their favorite songs for their peers.
“I really like the events the school provides, because in my old school, we didn’t have this kind of stuff at all,” Anna Correa, a first-year archeology student, said.
Correa performed two songs at the event. While singing “Somebody” by K-pop star Jung Cook, she even added choreography.
“K-pop is like dancing and singing,” Correa said. “So [I] actually wanted to start with the choreography.”
A couple students used this space to help overcome some of their anxieties regarding performing.
“I haven’t had many chances to perform in, like, a long time,” Harry Ledford, a first-year social work student, said. “I like performing, even though it’s really anxiety-inducing for me.”
Ledford brought his guitar to the event to play his favorite Green Day songs on.
“I think [this event] helps students be brave,” Winnie Shabazz, the event coordinator for the OSE, said. “A lot of students are singing in front of their peers … but also giving them the space and the stage to be able to exhibit their talent.”
Shabazz added: “There are some talented voices [here]. Our guitarist was here … it just gives students the opportunity to bring and showcase their talents in a fun way.”
The OSE partnered with the Arundel House of Hope for the event to gather soap to help families in Anne Arundel County in need.
