It’s not too early for students to start saving money for the future, a financial adviser told a campus audience on Wednesday.
“Saving is a prerequisite for investing,” Dawn Edgerton-Cameron, an Edward Jones financial adviser, said at the School of Business and Law event, designed to teach students about investing, time management, stocks and saving.
Business administration professor Oksana Fisher had this advice for students: “Make sure you’re planning for your plan not to go to plan. Sometimes it’s worth just saving, saving for the rainy, rainy day.”
Edgerton-Cameron agreed.
“The market goes up and the market goes down, and that’s normal,” Edgerton-Cameron said. “You should prepare for that.”
Plus, Fisher added, students should understand the stakes before they make a financial commitment.
“Explore your fears,” Fisher said. “We all are here to achieve great things. … [So] it’s OK to make mistakes.”
Stacy Korbelak, the assistant dean of business, economics and entrepreneurial studies, said students should think about what they’re investing their time and money into.
Fisher agreed, adding students should invest in themselves more than anything else.
“Learning and personal growth will always pay high dividends,” Fisher added.
When students are successful, they can help others reach their own financial goals, Fisher said.
Alex Adkins, a first-year business and office management student, said the event was “well-rounded.”
“It was pretty informative,” Adkins said. “It gave a broad overview of financial advice.”
Lindsey Stonesifer, a first-year business management student, agreed.
“It was really an amazing event and I’m so glad I went,” Stonesifer said.
Arnav Bali, a dual-enrollment student, said the best part about the event was the book giveaway.
The presenters raffled off copies of “The Psychology of Money” by Morgan Housel; “The Simple Path to Wealth” by JL Collins; “Die with Zero: Getting All You Can from Your Money and Your Life” by Bill Perkins; and “Clever Girl Finance” by Bola Sokunbi.
