AACC faculty artists presented their creative works at an art show in the Cade building on Thursday.
Nearly two dozen faculty members displayed their photographs, watercolor paintings, abstract artworks, sculptures, digital drawings and a video in the Cade Center for Fine Arts Gallery.
“[This event] gives, I think, students and you know, staff and faculty a chance to really see what it is that we do,” Karen Barber, the gallery’s director, said.
According to Barber, the artists created all of the work at the show within the last year.
“Everything in the exhibition is recent work,” Barber said. “It allows the larger campus community, and certainly the community at large, to get a better sense of what we do here and what our faculty has been up to.”
Printmaking and screen-printing coordinator Chris Mona displayed a digital art piece called “Ur Barrow.” Mona said his grandkids eating boxed junk food and his love for “mythology and ancient history” inspired the artwork.
Jennifer Schuster, a graphic design professor, submitted a pop-up book called “Motherload.” Schuster said her experiences as a mother inspired her work.
“I find that artists in general, especially women, are often discouraged from talking about their experiences of being mother and parent, and [yet] I feel like it’s a natural part of my work,” Schuster said. “It really struck me that we carry this load, which is often really exhausting, but also your heart is bursting with love along the way.”
Third-year studio art student Ceaira Shell said she went to the event to see new artwork for inspiration.
“I can get some ideas to expand my art,” Shell said. “I can learn or grow from seeing something different.”
Her sister, second-year art and business student Zeneeka Shell, said she thought it would be interesting to see “different art types and different perspectives.”
