Students feasted on free burgers and played games like cornhole and kickball at Siegert Field on Wednesday.
The Office of Student Engagement and AACC Athletics organized the Field Day as a part of the Fall Welcome Week series of events. The goal was to “get students to learn a little bit more about … [AACC] athletics” according to Kyle Godduhn-Braaten, OSE’s new student orientation and first-year experience specialist.
“It was just really satisfying to know that our outreach and everything is working, and that students are really willing to come out,” he said.
The food trucks Funnel Fare and Everything Legendary served free burgers and funnel cakes during the event.
“We paid [the food trucks] in advance,” Godduhn-Braaten said. “We make sure that everything we do, as much as possible, is free to students because they already paid for that access [via tuition].”
The day’s biggest challenge was the heat, he said.
“We were trying to make sure that it was safe for students,” Godduhn-Braaten said. “We don’t want people running around in the heat and, you know, passing out or anything like that. That’d be awful.”
Mckalynn Johnson, a first-year interior design student, called the Field Day “very thoughtful.”
“The more and more we reach out towards the community and the students, team, faculty, everybody that’s on campus, the better and better … us as a unit will be,” Johnson said.
Justus Outlaw, a first-year computer science student, said events like the Field Day “build chemistry” between students and the college.
