The Hawk’s Nest Grill & Deli started selling baked treats in April, like chocolate cupcakes and caramel popcorn, created by culinary students.
Melissa Hawkins, a hospitality, culinary arts and tourism instructional specialist, said the students are baking different kinds of pastries each week.
Hawkins said the student bakers are “very hands-on” in the process of selling the pastries.
“We help and guide them through the process, but they’re going to be responsible for all production packaging, looking at nutritional information, even pricing,” Hawkins said. “They [get] to see the raw ingredients all the way to a finished product.”
Hawkins said she has heard positive feedback so far.
“I’ve heard from several faculty members that they’ve been supporting it and are very excited to see what we do in the future,” Hawkins said.
Hawkins said she hopes to offer more allergy-friendly, gluten-free and vegan options in the future.
Hawkins also plans to involve other pastry classes, not just advanced courses.
The treats are refreshed once a week and the supply is limited, according to Hawkins.
