As an alumni I’m very disappointed in the article about “sexual purity.” I’m not sure why this topic was important enough to put in a campus newspaper, especially considering it’s giving a platform to sex shaming, misogyny and homophobia. I’m glad it at least showed the perspective of how the concept harms people but that doesn’t erase the harm that could be caused by giving a platform to people who think women should submit themselves to men and that gay people and people just living their lives are sinning. For a campus that claims to be an ally to the LGBTQ+ community, this does not give off the impression that you are—especially since you did not appear to feature anyone in the queer community to comment on this issue.
As an alumni of the school I’m saddened by how this particular issue was done. Especially the sexual purity article as right off the bat the first few quotes are shaming people for being sexually active. It’s even brought up in the article that people do use purity culture as a means to shame people, and that’s what they started the article with, shaming people.
As well as the quote about marriage being one man and one woman being deeply homophobic, which I thought this school was against as the current always seemed to be “allies” the the LGBT community.
As an alumni and former gsa president I find your article on sexual purity not only triggering but grossly outdated. This is exactly the kindof thing that allows homophobia to continue to run rampant in our community at the cost of queer lives.
